Aviator sunglasses, also known as "pilot sunglasses" or simply "Aviators", have a rich history dating back to the 1930's. Originally developed to protect the eyes of military pilots flying at high altitudes, eventually became a fashion statement once public figures and celebrities started wearing them. The aviator design has undergone several changes over the years but ultimately settled on the iconic teardrop shaped lenses that we know today as Aviators.
